It looks like millions of people around the world got an Android device for Christmas. 3.7 million Android devices were activated during the Christmas weekend. That’s a lot of handsets such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the HTC Sensation XE unwrapped during Christmas Eve and Christmas day.
Andy Rubin, senior vice president of mobile at Google, announced via Twitter that an average of 1.85 million Android devices was activated during the Christmas weekend. This was over twice as much devices activated compared to the 700,000 activations per day, which was also announced by Rubin previously.
Previously, Flurry Analytics reported that 6.8 million devices were activated during the Christmas weekend. These devices consisted of both Android and iOS devices. Since Rubin announced that 3.7 million of these devices were Android devices, this would mean that there were 3.1 million iOS devices activated during Christmas Eve and Christmas day.
Aside from device activations, app downloads were also at a rise. According to Flurry, 242 million apps were downloaded during Christmas. However, they failed to mention whether these were paid or free apps.
